What is psychosis?

Psychosis is a symptom that alters your thoughts and perceptions and makes it difficult for you to know what’s real and what’s not. The alterations may include seeing or hearing things that aren’t real or having strange thoughts or behaviors.

What are psychosis signs?

First-episode psychosis (FEP) refers to the early symptoms of psychosis. Identifying these symptoms and getting treatment right away may prevent any long-term consequences when psychosis is left untreated.

FEP signs and symptoms include:

  • Gradual change in thoughts or perceptions
  • Difficulty concentrating or thinking clearly
  • Being suspicious of others
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Strong inappropriate emotions or no emotions at all

These signs and symptoms indicate a change in health that would benefit from a physical and mental health exam.

When left untreated, FEP symptoms worsen and you may begin to experience hallucinations and delusions, which are symptoms of psychosis.

What causes psychosis?

Researchers are still investigating what causes the development of psychosis, but theorize it’s a series of factors. Risk factors for psychosis include:

  • Genetics
  • Substance abuse
  • Trauma
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Serious illness
  • Mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia

You’re more likely to develop psychosis during your teen or young adult years because of the changes in your hormones and developing brain.

How is psychosis diagnosed?

You may require an examination from your primary care physician, as well as the team at 2nd Chance Treatment Center, to diagnose psychosis. Your primary care physician performs a comprehensive evaluation to confirm or rule out a medical cause for your symptoms, while the team at 2nd Chance Treatment Center conducts a psychological exam to assess your mental health.

Getting the most accurate diagnosis ensures the best treatment and outcome.
